Thermage is a well-known non-surgical, radiofrequency device for skin tightening. It has been around since 2002, manufactured by Solta Medical, a division of Valeant Pharmaceuticals, North America. They have just recently released their latest 4^th generation of Thermage, called Thermage FLX.

Key distinguishing features of the new Thermage FLX are

• Speed

It is faster than before. Moreover, it is more energy efficient i.e. 1200-shots on the old Thermage CPT tip is equivalent to the new 900-shots Thermage FLX tip. The new enlarged tip size of 4 cm² allows a greater coverage and hence requires less treatment time.  

Furthermore, the new hand-piece is more ergonomic. It is lighter and easier to     maneuver by the doctor resulting in shorter treatment time.

• Efficacy

Improved ability to release energy to the same depth as ultrasound-energy based devices, offering not only tightening effects but also greater lifting effects.

• Comfort

Advanced vibration technology and cooling system on the new tip results in a more comfortable procedure.

How does Thermage FLX work

As we age, the collagen that keeps our skin firm deteriorates, causing aging signs of wrinkles and sagginess. The Thermage FLX releases energy in radiofrequency form, spreading the heat down and stimulating collagen contraction to tighten the skin, as well as stimulating collagen production to reflourish skin texture and firmness. Consequently, repeated multiple shots are required to be applied on the same area to stimulate the collagen, thereby improving the efficacy. Therefore, the number of shots required varies between individuals, depending on their skin quality.

How to prepare before the procedure

• Remove all makeup and clean your face
• Meet the doctor for consultation
• Take a photo (for comparison on the next visit)
• Numbing cream will be applied on the area of treatment
• A pad will be attached on your body to prevent skin burns

What to expect during the procedure

Initially, you may experience mild to moderate heat underneath the skin, then the heat will slowly accumulate as the treatment goes on. Please notify the doctor if the temperature is too hot.

Are there any common side effects?

You might experience some swelling and redness after the treatment. Some may feel some warmth underneath the skin although it usually subsides within 24 hours. You may return to your normal daily routine (i.e. wash your face or putting on makeup).

How often do I need Thermage?

Visible improvement is usually seen within 2-6 months after treatment and results continue to improve over time. Results can last over years and therefore only one treatment is needed every few years.

How long does it last?

Results can last over years, depending on individuals and their maintenance programme along the way.

Things to consider before doing Thermage FLX

• Always seek a medical consultation for evaluation prior to treatment to assess the suitability of the patient for this treatment.
• The treatment should be performed by an experienced physician, using both tips and machine that have been provided by directly Solta Medical or their regional distributor.
